Minimum Wage

What is the minimum wage ? The minimum wage is the lowest amount of money that employers are legally required to pay their employees in exchange for their labour. This rate is set by the government to ensure that employees can earn a fair, basic income. The minimum wage is updated periodically to reflect the current cost of living.

What is the purpose of the minimum wage? — The minimum wage was established to protect employees from being paid too little, which allows them to achieve a basic standard of living. It is intended to reduce poverty and income equality.

How is the minimum wage determined? — The minimum wage is set by governments based on factors, such as the cost of living, inflation, economic conditions, and the needs of employees as well as businesses. How often is the minimum wage adjusted in Luxembourg? — The minimum wage is adjusted every 2 years but may also be adjusted more frequently in order to match inflation and maintain living standards.

  • Young employee minimum wage: Employees aged 15 to 17 receive 75%* of the standard minimum wage, while those aged 17 and 18 receive 80%*.
  • Unskilled employee minimum wage: The standard minimum wage applies to all unskilled employees that are 18 years or older.
  • Skilled employee minimum wage: ‘Skilled employee’ typically refers to someone with specific training or qualifications and therefore receives a higher minimum wage, usually about 20%* higher than the standard rate.
