What it takes to set up as an independent in Luxembourg, in order - from the business permit to your first invoice.

01 Check if you need a business permit Most commercial, craft and some activities need an autorisation d'établissement from the Ministry of the Economy, proving qualification and good repute.
02 Choose your legal form Sole proprietorship (entreprise individuelle) or a company such as a SARL / SARL-S - it affects liability, tax and contributions.
03 Register the business List with the Luxembourg Business Registers (RCS) where required, and with the relevant authorities for your activity.
04 Register for tax and VAT Sign up with the tax authorities for income tax, and for VAT if your turnover requires it (or opt in). Collect your tax and VAT numbers.
05 Affiliate with the CCSS Register as a self-employed person within the required window - this sets up your social contributions.
06 Open a business bank account Keep business and personal money apart from day one. The single best habit you can build.
07 Set up bookkeeping and invoicing A system for sequential invoices, expense records, and reserving for tax, CCSS and VAT.
08 Sort your insurance Professional liability (RC professionnelle) and any cover specific to your sector.
